Training on Blade Maintenance by Means of ASAT ACE-31 Powered Ascending Device
2021-04-12News

Date: July 16th, 2020

Location: Power China Longfeng Wind Farm, Fenghuang Mountain, Zhuzhou City, Hunan Province

Trainees: After-sales Service Department of Zhuzhou Times New Material Technology Co., Ltd. (TMT)

Trainers: ASAT training team

At 8:30am on July 16th, ASAT trainers set off from Zhuzhou downtown to Power China Longfeng Wind Farm

in Fenghuang Mountain.  At 2:00pm, we conducted theoretical training on safety precautions of blade maintenance

at site of the wind farm. Then CSR personnel went up into the nacelle to shut down the generator and lock the

blades, lift the ropes and anchor point into the nacelle by the electric hoist. ASAT trainers went up into the nacelle

to set up the anchor point. One end of the ropes, which came out of the hatch and passed over the spinner, was

lowered to the ground from the front face of the nacelle(between two blades). The anchor point was secured at the

lifting hole of the bearing pillow block in nacelle. There are two rope friction points at the hatch and the spinner

respectively, where the rope was protected by rope protective sleeves. In order to facilitate rope traction, the rope

section left on the ground is about 20-30 m.A watch man was assigned on duty in the nacelle after the anchor point

was set up.

ASAT trainers conducted the practical training.  At first, a trainer attachedASAT ACE-31 Powered Ascending Device on

one of the ropes at left side (the inner cambered surface of the blade), connected the ventral attachment point of the

safety harness with thepowered ascending device, connectedthe sternal attachment point with the fall arrester,

and attached the seat board on the ventral attachment point and adjust it to fit.The trainer tried to operate the powered

ascending device for 3 circles of up and down in a short distance (about 1 m) to check its function and connection with.

When the powered ascending device was operated upwards to reach the level of the blade tip, the trainer surrounded

the work positioning lanyard on the blade tip.  Then the trainer continued to adjusted the position and length of the

lanyard along with ascending of the powered ascending device.  When the device was stopped at approximately 3 m

above the blade tip, the trainermovedto different positions (inner and outer cambered surfaces) around the blade tip by

means of pulling the work positioning lanyard leftwards and rightwards.

After the demonstration of the process was completed, the ASAT trainer explained the details that need to be paid attention

to the trainees on the ground. At the other side, another trainer operated another powered ascending device ascending to

monitor the operating process of the trainees at heights.

The trainees quickly mastered the skill of accessing the blade.  Two trainees performed the operation of accessing the

blade tip successfully by means of two sets of the powered ascending device on two ropes respectively with the support

of ground personnel. The training completed at 8:00 p.m.  ASAT ACE-31 Powered Ascending Device is suitable for close

inspection and minor repair of the wind turbine blades, especially for "unclogging drain hole " due to its small size, light

weight, simple operation and high efficiency. The task of "unclogging drain hole " can be performed by a group of 3 persons

easily and quickly, which used to be done by 6 persons in a longer time.
